Designed to provide broad exposure to the Small Cap Growth segment of the US equity market, the State Street SPDR S&P 600 Small Cap Growth ETF (SLYG) is a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on September 25, 2000.The fund is sponsored by State Street Investment Management. It has amassed assets over $4.94 billion, making it one of the larger ETFs attempting to match the Small Cap Growth segment of the US equity market.Why Small Cap GrowthWith more potential comes more risk, and small cap companies, with market capitalization below $2 billion, epitomizes this way of thinking.Growth stocks have higher than average sales and earnings growth rates. The selection universe for the S&P SmallCap 600 Index includes all U.S. common equities listed on the NYSE, NASDAQ Global Select Market, NASDAQ Select Market and NASDAQ Capital Market with market capitalizations between $250 million and $1.2 billion.The ETF return is roughly 21.05% so far this year and is up about 33.19% in the last one year (as of 06/16/2026). In the past 52-week period, it has traded between $86.10 and $113.84.The ETF has a beta of 1.06 and standard deviation of 19.62% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space.
