Kakao Map showing detailed North Korean geographical data goes viral online

South Korean map application Kakao Map’s detailed geographical data of North Korea went vital online as so far the information was blocked for South Korean apps. Many X, formerly Twitter, posts show Monday that they found it surprising that that Kakao Map can see the detailed data of North Korea. “Kakao Map shows us Pyongyang. I feel like I have been there,” a user wrote on X. The reactions likely reflects the decade-long censorship against North Korean information. Due to the fact that the two Koreas are technically at war and for many political reasons, it has been publically not allowed for South Koreans to access any North Korean information. If any South Korean meet North Koreans, the person should report to the government for meeting the North Korean citizen. As a Korea Times reporter checked the app, anyone can zoom in and zoom out to see the names of North Korean mountains, railway stops and universities. But it was not able to search the place by searching the names, but by simply moving the cursor, anyone could check the mapped North Korea or stellite images.
